Suruç was born in Kuskunlu village in the Hilvan district of Şanlıurfa in 1953. He finished primary, secondary, and high schools in Şanlıurfa. He studied at the Istanbul High Islamic Institute, graduating in 1976. He then worked for magazines, publishing houses, and newspapers, both as an editor and as the coordinator of the culture, arts, and literature pages. He also worked as a Press and Public Relations Advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office, as a consultant to the Turkish Parliament, as the Director of the National Library of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and as the Dushanbe Culture and Tourism Advisor. With his two-volume work, entitled The Life of the Messenger of God, Master of the Universe, he won the world Siyer (the Islamic field focused solely on the life of the Prophet) award for 1988, in Pakistan.
