MODERN MEDICINE NOW HAS A NEW DIMENSION TO IT: MUSIC-THERAPHY
There are documents on thousand year old history of treatment through music in Turkey. However, traditional use of music in Turkish-Islamic culture had temporarily ended after “Hasim Bey Magazine”. Treatment thogh music had long been erased from collective conscious of health system.
This field of science had been left alone in archives and libraries for a long time. Arslan Terzioğlu, Eckhard Neubauer, Hans Bürgel, Nil Sarı, Amnon Shiloah, and Ahmet Şahin have taken up therapy with music, which was only studied by writers like Cevdet (1908), as oriental treatment through music with its historical aspects without relying on the practical application.
Dr. Adnan Çoban has written a significant work on music with treatment, a neglected subject despite of its extraordinary historical aspect. “Music-therapy” has a speacial meaning due to the process in Turkey. We need to thank to Dr. Adnan Çoban for his efforts. He has made an amazing job with his book for it gives a second chance to the music-therapy in Turkey. The author, as a both musician and physician, builds a bridge between the past and future of the treatment with music. Wishing the succeeding steps to be taken.

It is a known fact for those who are already interested in the subject that Turkish music had been configured, formulated, and enriched from IX century until today, its sound system had also been enlightened since XIII century and all these developments have continued until XX century.
There are records documenting the results of treatment with music in mental hospitals and psychiatry centers during the Seljuk and Ottoman ages. However, it was a huge necessity to organize all these information that has reached to our time in bits.
My young colleague Dr. Adnan Çoban has felicitously brought in this book. I sincerely congratulate him for his genuine effort. I also would like to express my pleasure for his success in handling medicine and music together and I wish him to continue like this without cutting the speed.

Treatment with music has always been an inspiring subject throughout the history, various thoughts on this issue have kept societies busy, and different methods have been applied. Though people had some results through experience, they did not have a chance to scientifically analyze the data. Treatment with music had been carried through fairy tales, stories and shows for centuries and had even been abused for some interests.
I am particularly glad that my respected colleague Dr. Adnan Çoban has taken up the subject, “Treatment through Music”, from a totally scientific aspect. I sincerely congratulate this science man who has enlightened a subject that had been worn out due to some superstitions and such.
